Brandon Benjamin, an 18-year-old from Retreat, Cape Town, excels at surfing. He attended Muizenberg Primary School and at the age of ten was influenced by a visit from a local surf school.

He began attending surfing lessons and was immediately hooked. He has various titles under his belt and shows great promise.

Benjamin’s became the U/20 South African Champion at the age of only 15. He came third in the South African Surfing Championships of 2011 and repeated the feat in 2012. He describes his greatest surfing achievement as: “Winning first prize in the 2010 u/20 South African Championships in Reunion Island.”

Although Benjamin looks like your ‘average surfer’, his surfing skills could never be categorised as ‘standard’. With an arsenal full of mind-boggling aerial manoeuvres and sharp turns, his fluency and stylistic comfort remain undeniable.

When asked about his surfing goals, he replied: “To be the best and make it on the ASP (Association of Surfing Professionals) World Tour... to achieve what has not been achieved yet.”

The only thing preventing this young athlete from reaching his goals is insufficient funding for travel to international surfing events.

Benjamin displays his remarkable talent to the world through national competitions. He hopes to gain support for his future surfing career. World, meet Brandon Benjamin. Brandon Benjamin, meet the world.
