It seems as if a film has changed the partying lifestyle once and for all. Project X, a movie about one of the wildest house parties ever, has resonated with young adults of today. Clubs are becoming less appealing as house parties don’t cost as much, don’t require a serious dress code and are much safer. House parties are becoming more popular, as demonstrated in some of today’s music videos: Mi Casa’s ‘Jika’, AKA’s ‘Kontrol’, LMFAO’s ‘Sorry For Party Rocking’ and Drake’s ‘Started From The Bottom’.

So how does one prepare for the Project X experience?

How do you survive a house party?

Here are a few tips:

A Dummie's Guide to House Parties

By Uhuru Plaatjies

  • THE BOOZE

What’s a party without it? Well, you don’t always need booze to have fun, but there will be plenty of it!

House parties have a Code: bring your own XY and poison (Z). It’s way cheaper to bring your own liquor from a store than to buy at a club. It is important that you remember to buy your alcohol before the stores close. Capetonians have to buy their alcohol before 18h00 (Monday-Saturday) and are prohibited from buy on Sundays.

  • The Outfit

We understand that you want to look hot and stand out. Usually house parties aren’t themed, so the casual look will do fine. Wear something that won’t be difficult to wash (accidents do happen, especially at house parties!) You wouldn’t want your expensive outfit becoming somebody’s barf bag when the night is over. Preferably wear something comfortable and fitting to weather conditions (all house parties are indoor and outdoor).

  • You are going to get pushed!

It’s never cool to be in your ‘zone’ and somebody walks into you or pushes you. Do not panic! Count to one (counting to three takes too long) and look away! It’s better to avoid eye contact or say anything because this could result in a fight. Nobody likes wrestlers at a party. It’s all fun and games until you get hit accidently… with a bottle. Understand that this is a house party crammed with people so all you go to do is smile and say ‘it’s okay’.

  • The House Party Punch

If you know what’s good for yourself and your liver, do not drink the punch. Punch has caused many headaches and forgetful nights. The refreshing brew contains beverages such as vodka, tequilas, spirits, cool drinks, gin or juice. Yes, it tastes lovely… but you will regret it the next day! There’s nothing better than a cooldrink to warm up your night and give you memories that you won’t forget.

  • Be Responsible!

You need to be responsible. Yes, a house party is a more ‘controlled’ environment but it could get rough. This is still the real world: you cannot always trust the environment you are in. You need to think of what you are doing before anything else. Drink responsibly, have safe sex and try to not break anything!

And lastly: have the best f*cking night ever!
