Johnny Depp is said to be in ‘final discussions’ with Disney in closing a deal to reprise his role as The Mad Hatter in the Alice in Wonderland sequel, currently titled Through the Looking Glass.

The Lewis Carroll film adaptation grossed over one billion dollars worldwide in 2010, surpassing Iron Man 2, Twilight Saga: Eclipse and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 to become the second biggest blockbuster movie of the year.

However, his latest movie The Lone Ranger received poor reviews and became a commercial flop. Even though the movie had a star-studded line-up including Armie Hammer, Tom Wilkinson and Alice in Wonderland co-star Helena Bonham Carter. Movie enthusiasts were contemplating whether the Golden Globe award-winning actor would ever get another promising acting role.

James Bobin, director of The Muppets, was announced as the director of the sequel with Linda Woolverton writing the screenplay.

Depp crushed all the feeble rumours again when Disney announced earlier this year that he had signed on to the fifth instalment of Pirates of the Caribbean. On the 29th of May, Disney announced that Joachim Ronning and Espen Sandberg, Norwegian directors of Kon-Tiki, were on board to direct the movie. According to The Wrap, Disney will release Pirates of the Caribbean 5 in July 2015.

Many fans will agree that James Bobin replacing Tim Burton as the director will probably have no effect on the movie’s potential. Let us hope Bobin is able to match the brilliance of Burton’s creativity that made Alice in Wonderland a household cinematic name. We are excited to see what Bobin has up his sleeve. No release date has been announced yet.
