The Civil Union Act, which made same-sex marriage legal in South Africa, came into law on the 30th of November 2006.

South Africa is referred to as the ‘Rainbow Nation’ and our flag is quite similar to the colourful and vibrant banner called the ‘Gay Pride flag’.

South Africa is one of the many countries in which same sex marriage has been legalised.

Archbishop Desmond Tutu is a prominent supporter of Gay Pride in South Africa. Such a stance adopted by a man of status and moral authority appears to have influenced many citizens to change their mindset regarding gays. Nevertheless, why should someone prominent first support something before others follow? Why are we following the stream and not beginning our own?

Gay in S.A.: Putting the Rainbow into ‘Rainbow Nation’

It pains me to know that we live in a democracy where there is still discrimination against homosexuals. Although we are unique, we are human beings. Citizens should have the same rights and command the same respect regardless of their sexual identity.

The Cape Town Pride Festival is held annually and is a celebration of diversity and creates awareness for all lesbian, gay, transgender and bisexual communities locally and throughout Africa. South Africa has taken the right step forward, but let’s not have shitty people (who hate on us) tell us who we should be!
