Kodi Woodman, a 19-year-old rapper who was born and raised in Cape Town, goes by the stage name ‘COPA_1’.

COPA_1 was raised in Muizenberg and now resides in Wynberg. He originally started dancing in high school for a dance crew called the Street Stylers’, but transitioned towards music at the age of 17.

COPA_1 forms part of a rap group by the name of Y-GENERATION with two other local rappers: E-Jay and YoungstaCpt. Each member brings a different sound that combines to produce a unique dynamic, which can only be described as ‘hip-hop music’.

Hip-hop rap music is a rhythmic speech that is expressed over a beat. It is a sub-culture defined by four key stylistic elements: scratching, rapping, graffiti writing and break-dancing.

The flowing sound that COPA_1 produces makes you feel like you are listening to an award-winning international artist. Compositions filled with metaphors, punch-lines and conundra set his music above the rest.

“What I’m trying to achieve is to leave a legacy behind and open up doors for the next generation. To leave a mark on international level, not only for myself but for the people of South Africa and Cape Town,” said COPA, who is releasing a debut EP entitled The Voice and has released his new single, ‘Where’d She Get My Number?’.

According to COPA_1’s Facebook page, he released a teaser of another single from ‘The Voice’ called ‘D-Daze’ and described it as “Basically about change in how we should look at life. It's for everyone who claims they put in work but the work ethic is missing."
