Love food, love the fair

By: Chelsey Hawkins

All along St George’s Mall, you’ll see familiar stalls and stores… but every Thursday this little piece of Cape Town gets a tad more interesting when the Earth Fair Food Market, a ‘pop-up’ outdoor food market, breathes new life into this promenade.

Every Thursday from 11am until 3pm, people crowd the stalls of this popular market to the extent that the path barely allows one to experience the delightful food and treats. It even has locals looking like tourists: taking pictures as they walk up and down, desperate not to miss a single stand. The only downside is choosing which mouth-watering dish to try first. You’ll find everything from biltong to seafood paella. For those with a sweet tooth, there’s a variety of sweet desserts to choose from – whether you’re a fan of fudge or cupcakes or something in between. This Earth Food Market is an affair the whole family can enjoy or even just a stop on your lunch break. Not only is the food amazing and the traders a bunch of friendly faces, but the prices are affordable and entirely worth it!

There’s a little something for everyone and, food aside, the whole feel of an outdoor food market is especially beautiful on a sunny day in Cape Town. The Earth Fair Food Market recently celebrated its third birthday and it was certainly a must-see event. The sound of live music mixed with the smell of good food and the eye-pleasing sight of Cape Town’s people walking around and enjoying this local treasure… this market is definitely a feast for all the senses.

The market also takes place in Tokai, as an undercover food market, where it hosts more than 40 top-quality traders and is every bit as exceptional as the smaller branch in Town.

So if good food, culture and friendly faces are what you’re looking for in the Mother City, there is no doubt you’ll find it here between Wale and Church Street. And don’t worry about those showery Thursdays… you’ll find this market under the cover of Mandela Rhodes Place.
